    Description

This 1868 Franco Prussian War Era French M1866 Chassepot Yataghan Sword Bayonet & Scabbard is in very good condition considering it's age and service history. The bayonet was produced by a hard to find German contract maker Y. Funcke & Cie o
    f
Herdecke in 1868. Only between 1867 and 1868 did German contractors supply French orders, making them very rare to encounter. Of particular note, this bayonet's crossguard is also unit marked with what I believe to be a German Landsturm Infantry unit. The marking is "25. L. I. 1. 32." and I believe translates to "25 Bataillon Landsturm Infantry Regiment, 1. Kompagnie, rifle number 32." There is also a serial number and an inspector's mark present on the same side of the crossguard, these I believe to be French. The blade is in excellent condition and retains an impressive point. The brass grip is clean, the slot is marked "J" and the release catch appears to function properly. The scabbard is original to the same era of production but does not match to the blade. There are two serial numbers stamped near the throat, denoting service with multiple blades. This is truly an exceptional example of a Model 1866 Chassepot sword bayonet captured by the Germans during the Franco Prussian War of 1870-71 and would make an excellent addition to any French or German bayonet collection. Please examine the photographs carefully for the best description of condition.
