This full size bronze gilt 29mm medal with
two olive palms supporting a crescent
was
bestowed for participation in the Battle of the Dardanelles, also known as the Gallipoli campaign against the Central Powers by the Corps Expéditionnaire d'Orient supported by the Royal Navy and French Navy between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916.
The obverse is a female head facing left wearing a helmet with oak wreath inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’, signed ‘Georges Lemaire’ (sculptor and engraver, 1853-1914); the reverse with oak and laurel leaves, a cannon, a naval anchor and standards inscribed ‘HONNEUR ET PATRIE 1915-1918’ inscribed ‘DARDANELLES’, signed ‘E M Lindauer’ (for the great engraver Edmond-Émile Lindauer, 1869-1942).
